<B>Lawyer Bibi goes on the offensive</B>
The relationships between lawyer Jean-Claude Bibi, defender of Human Rights, and superintendent Prem Raddhoa, of the Major Crime Investigation Team, are getting worse. The lawyer made a statement against SP Raddhoa in a letter to the attorney general, Rama Valayden. The latter has informed the lawyer that his letter has been referred to the commissioner of police for an enquiry into the allegations. Jean-Claude Bibi asserts that he was threatened and insulted by SP Raddhoa in the latter’s office as lawyer of Bahim Arjlee, one of the suspects in the Pétrin case. The lawyer, however, expressed doubts that the CP can take action against SP Raddhoa and believes the only solution lies in a genuine political will to eradicate human rights violations. SP Raddhoa has so far denied the lawyer’s allegations.
Chilkungunya, still a cause for concern</B>
Despite the campaign by the ministry of Health to eradicate the mosquito-borne disease, chikungunya, the authorities are anxious as summer gets closer. Even though the number of cases in Reunion has drastically fallen during winter, the situation in India could become alarming. Chikungunya is not the only virus raging; malaria and dengue fever are other risks. In view of the number of people travelling within the region, the authorities have taken all necessary steps to avoid an epidemic here with tests done on visitors and travellers after they arrive in Mauritius. But only time will tell if the measures taken are proved constructive.
