Burglars strike too often in Moka
The inhabitants of Eurêka in Moka have not been able to rest easy since the beginning of the year. Burglars have visited a large number of these homes accumulating about Rs 1 million. The latest place to be burgled was Eurêka colonial house where the criminals stole a certain number of handicraft products. Some inhabitants have realised that the atmosphere has changed in the area. While it had been a quiet place with a family atmosphere for years it is now being spoilt by a gang, some say. Beer cans are often found close to the houses. The police guarantee that they are doing their job and enquiries are undertaken in every case.
Flu affects many people
More than 10,000 are down with flu. But statistics could be even higher as all those affected by the disease may not have been to hospitals. Those who go directly to the chemist’s are not counted in these statistics. The main reason for this rise in the number of cases is the decrease in temperatures registered during the past month. The disease is characterised by a bout of fever and eventually by respiratory problems. As the metrological centre doesn’t forecast warmer days this week, the problem may not go away in the immediate future. It may even get worse.
Air Mauritius wants to be the best
The local airline is improving its services. Tropical cocktails and hot towels will be given to all premium travellers at the boarding counter. The company also wants to be seen as one of the most punctual airlines. Likewise, a special team has been set up to ensure that the cabins are always spotless – from the seats to the trolleys, everything must be immaculate. Services on the ground and on board will also be subject to improvements as Air Mauritius intends to “compete” with five-star hotels.
Jockey Taylor can breathe for a while
Jason Taylor, the Australian jockey who was suspected in the rigged horse-racing affair, must be a bit relieved. His father-in-law sent an affidavit from Australia to confirm what he said to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) when he was taken in for questioning. When his house was searched in Grand-Bay and the officers found some Rs 534,000, the jockey said Rs 234,000 was given to him by his father-in –law after he left for Australia and the rest was given to him by three punters. One of the punters has also confirmed this to the ICAC.
