CEB technical problem leads to “oil-spill”
The Central Electricity Board (CEB) has expressed its regrets for the “oil-spill”, which occurred at Grand River North West and affected Pointe-aux-Sables beach last week. A mechanical problem led to the flow of two tons of oil into the river and this will certainly have a negative impact on the marine ecosystem. Only time will show the extent of the actual damage. The ministry of Environment warned the CEB that it has to bring in corrective measures within the next six days.
After inhabitants of GRNO were woken up by the smell of heavy oil last Thursday, the CEB station of St Louis started an internal enquiry to see what had caused this pollution. The company also called upon a private company to clean up the damage and the situation has practically gone back to normal.
There was a united effort to clean up Canal Dayot as well as the lagoon in Pointe-aux-Sables. The inhabitants, CEB technicians and workers as well as officers of the ministry all worked very hard to clean the place up. Although they didn’t have appropriate means to do the job, they managed to deal with the remaining waste.
However, their efforts have been somewhat discouraged by acts of vandalism. People came to the polluted areas and put the waste that had been removed out of the water back into it. “We were then back to square one,” the general manager of the CEB says. But they finally managed to remove most of the heavy oil out of the lagoon and canal.
