A dose of business and a pinch of art make a fruitful company
It is a fact: Mauritians are full of resources. They are famous for always finding a way of getting out of any difficult situation… In this context, Jocelyn Lacour is definitely one of the most Mauritian guys in the island. He is somewhere between the artist and the businessman; he seems to like the idea of being an artist but business is part of his personality as well. A mason for more than thirty years ago, he is now the happy owner of four different companies but Dream Pottery is definitely his greatest source of pride. And his giant pots for interior and exterior decoration are really promising!
“The company offers some ten different categories of pottery items ranging from decorative pots to fully functional waterfalls. To date, around 100 items are on display most of which are giant pottery products that may exceed the average height of a person,” explains the company manager.
Jocelyn Lacour is involved in so many activities that every minute is important to him… Not only does he have to manage his four companies – especially the one dealing with construction – but he also designs all the pots in his workshop. “When I was just ten, I couldn’t leave anything lying on the floor… If I saw a piece of wood, I would see that it looked like a snake and sculpt it until it really became one… The same for any other material… I think it is in my blood…”
More than a hobby</B>
He admits he often starts a painting without knowing how it will end up… But he has never been disappointed by one of his creations and thrown it away… “All this is a matter of feeling. It definitely means something for me so I can’t be disappointed anyway!”
But his business doesn’t only consist in decorative pots or waterfalls and fountains; he also specialises in relief paintings, which he does himself from the very beginning to the finishing touch… How could a painting not be flat, you would say? Well, the originality of Jocelyn’s creations is the fact that his raw material is cement … The same as the one used for building… Now the link between his construction company and his work as an artist appears clearer, doesn’t it?
Actually, what happened is that the construction business was in a bad way a few years ago. So Jocelyn had to find a way out from an extremely difficult financial situation… This is how he came to the pottery business… What was a hobby at first turned out to be a very profitable activity. As a result, not only has the pottery business succeeded but it has also helped to boost the construction side.
Several reasons explain why Jocelyn Lacour is so proud of his creations. The fact that they are made with cement makes them stronger than most other pots. Then they are weather-resistant and can be used either indoors or in the garden. Needing a minimum of maintenance, they do not cause any problems.

Moreover, if you want to change your decoration one day, the pots can be painted again in any other colour which will give them a completely different look. Finally, the most important thing for Jocelyn is that these creations are entirely “Mauritian inspired, designed and produced.”
The fact is that these original creations are arriving on the scene at a time when “the Mauritian market is becoming more sophisticated and people are looking for products that are different from what has been around for some time”. He doesn’t only target individuals but he has also supplied hotels like Heritage Golf & Spa, the Telfair and the Voile d’Or in Bel Ombre and Preskil in Blue Bay, for instance.
The company seems to target quite a high-class clientele. Moreover, you wouldn’t expect such a business to exist in the depths of Coromandel. The modernity and style of his office is a pleasant surprise. And, as expected, Jocelyn is at the origin of the decoration of the office too. Blue and yellow predominate and it has been fitted out with much taste. Jocelyn’s talent can already be measured when you step in his door.
Now, his dream is that the company works so well that he can stop dealing with the administration and management to concentrate on the creative side… “My wish is to remain in my small workshop and create my own designs!”
