<B>The Magic Lantern is lit again </B>
The New Magic Lantern was officially inaugurated last week. Even if the building is in the same location, its infrastructure differs a lot from the one Rose-Hill knew until 2000, when it was destroyed in a fire. However, it seems the Lim family is as proud of this brand-new shopping mall as it was of its former building. Besides the modern book shop, Le Cygne, the centre includes some twenty shops, which target a younger public.
<B>Poorer sugar harvest than expected</B>
Bad weather during the month of March has affected the prospects of a good sugar harvest this year. The Mauritius Sugar Industry Research Institute (Msiri) issued their monthly bulletin last Wednesday, affirming that the crop will not be able to recover from the damage caused by the recent conditions. Heavy rain, the accumulation of water in the fields and insufficient sunny weather have stunted growth by as much as 40%, according to the Msiri.
<B>Regional expansion for Constance Hotels </B>
Constance Hotels has just finalised a contract for a four-star hotel in Port Launay, Mahé island ? in the Seychelles. It is even looking towards South Africa, which is impressed by Mauritian expertise. The Constance group already has three hotels in Mauritius and Seychelles, the most prestigious being the Prince Maurice on the east coast. The latter has had a great financial year in 2004 and is one of the most expensive hotels in the Indian Ocean. Constance group also owns Belle Mare Plage and two golf courses, Links and Legends, as well as Le Lemuria Resort in the Seychelles.
<B>A spiritual healer murdered in a graveyard</B>
The body of Jaylall Seemanto was found on Friday night beside the ?Grande croix? in Bois Marchand cemetery. His death is believed to be an act of vengeance. At about 7:20 pm, when he was about to begin a healing ritual on a young girl, who was seriously ill, three masked men sprung upon him, two of them carrying metal bars. They beat him violently and left him, bleeding to death. By the time the ambulance arrived and he was finally taken to hospital, nothing could be done to save him. Two leads are being followed by the Central Investigation Division: an unsatisfied customer or a rival healer. There are about six suspects on the list. His sons are demanding that justice be done?
