Killer?s flight reopens wounds of terror in Italy
The flight of a convicted killer enjoying asylum in France has frustrated Italy?s efforts to bring ex-guerrillas to justice and reopened wounds from an era when the Red Brigades terrorised the country.
The disappearance of Cesare Battisti, who failed to turn up at a police station where he has to appear regularly, has enraged Rome and aggravated ideological divisions in Italy and France on how to deal with ageing radicals.
Convicted in Italy of four murders in the 1970s during a period of domestic political terror, Battisti is one of more than a dozen former militants still on the run outside Italy.
