An authentic vision of Madagascar!
At this point in time where Mauritians are showing a lot of interest in Madagascar, it is essential that they have an authentic vision of that country. Gilbert Andrianantoanina, the regional technical assisstant of the Indian Ocean Commission, is concerned that our account of what he said in his profile in our edition of 30th March may have given an unflattering image of his country. He specifies that when he said he liked the green of Mauritius, he did not mean that Madagascar was ?bare and brown.? Since he talked of bush fires, we concluded that there were ?bare and brown? landscapes but we also mentioned what he said about ?how different parts of it (Madagascar) have totally different environments.? In the same way, we did not quote him as calling the outskirts of his town ?dangerous? but concluded it was so since he talked of cattle thefts in the region. It was far from our intention to harm the image of Madagascar.
