Plumes engagées
The farewell (to Mrs. Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen)
Angkush Poonye.
À l’heure du tout à l’image et du buzz sans suite, «l’express» souhaite faire découvrir la plume de poètes, de chanteurs, d’écrivains et de tous ceux qui jettent leur âme sur le papier, et qui mettent en mots des réflexions profondes.
To Mrs. Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen, ex-Mayor of
Beau-Bassin–Rose-Hill
Your close ones had to wave a final goodbye,
This goodbye was unpredictable and felt difficult,
Destiny had other plans, but you shall remain
a legacy for many.
Known for your dynamism to assist those in need,
Known for your enthusiasm to advocate for the youth,
Known for your humble nature to empower others,
Mrs. Rajenee – your imprints will remain carved.
Your role always went beyond just being a Mayor,
Your pride always lay in seeing others shine,
Your title never drew you away from the common people,
Your limelight never dimmed others’ candles.

Your absence shall not be erased,
Your contributions to our society shall not be forgotten,
Wherever you might be now, you shall remain cherished,
Mrs. Rajenee Mootoo-Caroopen – Gone early, but shall
always reign in people’s hearts
With utmost gratitude and respect

Bio
Angkush Poonye
A Certified Chartered Accountant by profession and a poet by passion, he discovered his love for poetry when he was in secondary school. He published his first poetry book “The Aapravasi’s Legacy” in 2020, a poetry book which narrates the journey of an Indian indentured labourer brought from India to Mauritius in the 1800s. With his second publication, “As One People, As One Nation” in August 2024, from which this poem is derived, he hopes to inspire Mauritians about the importance of being a true patriot, and help the rising generations to learn more about the times when Mauritianism made a difference for the people and their beloved country.
