I had the privilege of undertaking my Erasmus+ KA171 exchange programme at Bialystok University of Technology in Białystok, Poland, from February to July 2024, where I studied Financial Management, Banking, and International Accountancy with a focus on Innovation and Economic Policy. This experience went beyond academics, becoming a defining period of intellectual and cultural growth.

Lecturers promoted open dialogue, critical thinking, and practical application of concepts. Attending seminars led by representatives from PKO Bank Polski provided valuable insight into the European banking system.

Equally impactful were my interactions with students from Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Romania. Collaborating on projects and sharing everyday experiences with such a group broadened my perspective in ways no classroom alone could achieve.

My Erasmus+ experience was the first time I lived fully independently, managing daily responsibilities while pursuing my studies. It reshaped my mindset, making me more independent, resilient, and adaptable.

Exposure to diverse cultures introduced me to new ways of thinking that continue to influence how I approach life and understand the world. Traveling across Europe further deepened my appreciation of different ways of life.

Importantly, this experience also contributed to my academic success, helping me achieve a First Class Honours in BSc Accounting and Finance upon returning to my home university.

One of my best memories in Poland was experiencing my first-ever snowfall, which was truly unforgettable and made the experience feel magical.

Another memorable moment was my arrival from Warsaw to Białystok bus station at night. I did not have access to a taxi app, but a stranger kindly helped me arrange an Uber to reach my hostel and refused to accept any payment. This was my first impression of Poland, and it left a lasting sense of kindness and hospitality.I also deeply enjoyed exploring the country, from the modern skyline of Warsaw to the historic beauty of Kraków Old Town and the coastal charm of Gdańsk. In addition, I cherish the moments spent with friends in pubswhere singing and dancing created lasting memories.

Furthermore, I am still in contact with many of the lecturers and students I met. Even after the programme, some of my lecturers continued to support me, including providing guidance for my dissertation, which I greatly appreciate. I also keep in touch with several European students through Instagram and WhatsApp. We regularly exchange messages and updates, and these connections have helped me maintain the international friendships and networks.

During my Erasmus+ experience, I travelled extensively across Europe and visited several cities including Budapest, Prague, Vienna, Rome, Berlin, Brussels, Vatican City, Zagreb, Bratislava, Tallinn, Riga, Vilnius, Oslo, Copenhagen, and Stockholm.

Each destination offered a unique cultural and historical journey. In Rome, I was truly amazed by its rich historical heritage, especially visiting the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon, while experiencing the timeless beauty of the city. I also enjoyed authentic Italian cuisine such as gelato, tiramisu, and pasta, which added to the overall experience. In Vatican City, I had the opportunity to visit St. Peter’s Basilica, a deeply inspiring and spiritual landmark that reflects extraordinary architecture and history.

In Brussels, I visited the iconic Atomium, which left a strong impression with its futuristic design and symbolic representation of scientific progress. In Vienna, the Schönbrunn Palace captured my attention with its grandeur and historical elegance, offering a glimpse into Austria’s imperial past.I was also deeply impressed by the Baltic countries, where I explored UNESCO-listed medieval Old Towns that have preserved centuries of history.

One of the most unforgettable moments of my journey was witnessing the Northern Lights in Oslo—a truly oncein-a-lifetime experience. I also enjoyed the frozen beauty of Stockholm’s Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum, as well as the colourful, vibrant atmosphere of Copenhagen.

These travels allowed me to experience Europe’s cultural diversity in a meaningful and unforgettable way, significantly shaping my global perspective.

My top three cities are Prague in the Czech Republic, Budapest in Hungary, and Berlin in Germany.

In Prague, I greatly enjoyed the scenic beauty of the city, especially Charles Bridge and the Astronomical Clock Tower. The culinary experience was equally memorable, especially tasting dishes like schnitzel and the famous trdelník.I tried the traditional trdelník despite having a sore throat—a small moment that became a lasting memory.

In Budapest, I experienced a memorable Danube River cruise, which offered stunning views of the city at night. The scenic view of Budapest from Fisherman’s Bastion was an additional highlight, offering a breathtaking panorama of the city. I also enjoyed traditional Hungarian food such as lángos and kürtőskalács, which added to the cultural experience.

In Berlin, the Brandenburg Gate captured my attention as a powerful historical landmark. I also explored the East Side Gallery, where I learned more about the history of East and West Berlin, which gave me a deeper understanding of the city’s past. During my visit, I also tried the famous Rüyam Gemüse Kebab, which added a local culinary experience to my time in the city

Memories for a lifetime

Beyond travel, I see Europe as a place of opportunity for further studies, professional growth, and future business ventures. My Erasmus+ experience was truly life-changing; it reshaped my mindset, broadened my perspective, and gave me some of the most meaningful memories of my life.

This journey did not end when I returned home—it continues to influence who I am today and who I aspire to become. There are countless memories I created during this experience that cannot be fully expressed in words, but will remain with me forever.

I am deeply grateful to the European Union for providing such opportunities to students like me, allowing us to grow, connect, and learn beyond borders. It is an experience that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
