Curfew #day 5: Online chaos
Sun zi said: " Apparent disorder is born of order... apparent weakness of strength. Order or disorder depends on organisation and weakness or strength on dispositions."
Here comes chapter 5: The use of energy.
Since this morning the messages and complaints about the online shopping bugs and sometimes incoherences keep pouring. We hear about online systems going down, shops being out of stock or the food pack's contents being wrongly thought through. These grievances are totally legitimate. But, it can also be an opportunity for the authorities and service providers to take note of the loopholes so as to better their systems and give better services in this period of lockdown frustrations and fear. As, if we need to keep away from the disease, with already 94 cases, we also need food among other basic necessities.
On our side, us, civilians must try in these dark days to understand that the government is also facing this situation for the first time, their trials might not be perfect right from the start, but we'll eventually find our cruising speed through the days till we halt the deadly spread of the Covid-19 in our motherland.
Our apparent bungling actions/reactions are not isolated. Unlike China, Mauritius among others isn't a country where the concept of E-commerce is entrenched in nearly all daily activities including buying an orange with the hawker on the street. China has more than 800 million digital consumers, "generating $ 683 billion in online retail sales during the first six months of 2019 only" reports China Daily.
These bugs are thus unfortunately the pebbles we have to walk on until we (soon) reach the smoother path.
In England, the authorities seem to already be completely overtaken by their online shopping demand and same, the complaints are drowning the social media platforms. Amid this chaos, supermarkets have warned that they are struggling to keep up with the online demands and are begging for people to shop in store while taking the necessary precautions.
This dual system; Online + in store shopping taking into account the sanitary precautions might be an idea.
In the US, the overwhelmed grocery delivery service providers are working round the clock to respond to the increasing demands, while some are even looking into hiring more people for delivery.
Back here, consumers sharing their difficulties and questionings is very important, however, the authorities MUST listen and hear these complaints to improve the measures rapidly. Team work is essential all along the chain; from the government, the MCCI, the shops, the grocery delivery service providers, the police force, the consumers....
People experienced in E-commerce must seize this opportunity to share their ideas, the government needs to take note of how other countries are successfully managing this system to tackle the difficulties that consumers are facing.
As for us, we must continue to share our constructive remarks as finally we all are in the same boat.
