Years go by and bring changes. After a long period of trial and error by the Mauritian Militant Movement (MMM), the party has come back full of vigour and hope for the future. The big crowd which was present at the Octave Wiehe auditorium was full of enthusiasm and ready to proclaim the “come-back” of the MMM and its leaders. In view of this enthusiasm, the MMM did not hesitate to celebrate their strength and warn the Militant Socialist Movement (MSM) that it will not accept any sort of alliance. Only one in favour of the MMM will be acceptable, according to the party members.

Whether it is a new lease of life for the MMM or just disappointment in the present government is open to discussion. “Government has taken us all for a ride. Prices are rising and the MMM is the party that really works for the most vulnerable members of society,” commented one of the 4,000 people present in Réduit yesterday. This may indeed be a sign that many people who supported the government in July 2005 are now frustrated and have changed their colours… In any case, the MMM seems to have understood that it would be well advised to take advantage of this situation.

Not only has it allowed party members to be more confident in the future but they have also seized the opportunity to warn their former ally that “the MMM and Bérenger should not be taken for granted”. The party leaders seem in favour of an alliance with the MSM but only if their own conditions are accepted. The deputy leader did not mince his words, “Time will tell whether we should or could make an electoral alliance. Everyone has a dignity that should always be respected. There must be a respectable alliance which works in our favour”.

As the MSM does not appear ready to give up the idea of Pravind Jugnauth becoming the next Prime minister, the alliance does not seem to be in the making forthwith…
