● Has the State Trading Corporation signed the contract with the Chinese company, ZJ Flour Industry?
Yes, they signed the contract last Tuesday for the purchase of 100,000 tons of flour. As the contract does not clearly mention any period, Les Moulins de La Concorde (LMLC) were afraid that the government would not keep its promise to allocate them 50% of the contract to supply the country in flour. But the private company finally received the official letter mentioning that it had obtained half the contract for the total supply of the country.
● What about the quotas imposed by the Chinese government on the export of flour?
The decision of Chinese authorities to put a quota on the export of flour and remove subsidies on this exported product has created a shock among the Mauritian officials. They had discussions with a Chinese delegation currently in Mauritius but no details have leaked out so far.
● What about the quality of the product?
It appears that the first tests have not been very conclusive but the officials have not made any official comments so far.
● Will Mauritius import flour also from Turkey?
The STC has ordered flour from Turkey, which should arrive in Mauritius within this week. They purchased some 20,000 tons for a sum around Rs 300 million, which should bring the stock of flour available for the country for this year to 120,000 tons while the average consumption is about 91,000 tons a year. The STC has not commented on this decision yet.
