What you should know ?
● Why do doctors intend to protest on 29 June? About 1,200 doctors of the public and private sectors intend to protest at the Plaza in Rose-Hill on 29th June. They do not agree with the fact that their foreign colleagues practise in the private sector and say it is ?unfair competition?, as they are not authorised to do it.
● Are there a lot of foreign doctors in Mauritius? There is indeed a rising number of foreign doctors. The local practitioners are particularly angry because, in other countries, only local doctors are authorised to be in the private sector. The main problem is that foreign doctors often ask for less money for an intervention and customers do not hesitate to choose them.
● If doctors are authorised to come to Mauritius, it must mean that there is a lack here in Mauritius? No, according to local practitioners. One of their main grievances is precisely the fact that the authorities do not take the criterion of ?scarcity areas? into consideration when they deliver the permits. While local general practitioners do not have enough work, people are brought from abroad to do the same job. As long as the doctor obtains his or her work permit, the medical council has to enrol him or her as private practitioner.
