The Consular Information Sheet by the American State Department has warned American citizens of the potential dangers they could face in Mauritius. ?Although violent crimes are uncommon, petty crime is a problem (...) Thefts on public beaches are a concern and visitors should keep track of their belongings at all times. Women, in particular, are advised against walking alone, particularly on public beaches and at night.? After reading such advice, tourists may not be so attracted by our small island. In a country highly dependent on its tourism revenue, the authorities should be aware of such an impression and find ways to tone it down. It is not a matter of hiding the facts ? people intending to come to Mauritius should be made aware of them ? but rather a matter of finding practical ways of affording protection.
