Uteem?s ?hot meal? suggestion

Cassam Uteem?s article in l?express of 16th May 2008 asking Finance minister Rama Sithanen to provide in the forthcoming budget for a daily square hot meal to primary school pupils invites some comments. Cassam Uteem has become fond of writing articles or opinions and giving press conferences every now and then without plausible reason.

So we, as members of the public, expect him to let us know what he is up to? What games is he playing? Is he doing it for the gallery? In the light of his reply, we shall resume the discussion of his suggestion of a daily hot meal to primary school pupils. If his suggestion is implemented, primary schools will sooner than expected change into three-star hotels. And we can say ?Adieu? to any worthwhile teaching.

But, of course, we want to know what is Mr Uteem?s contribution to this proposal? Where would the money come from? Perhaps he is unaware that most subsidies on essential foods have been removed by government. The majority of the population is suffering and cannot afford one square meal a day. On the other hand, Mr Uteem?s thoughts and reflections to combat and alleviate poverty are very commendable. His thoughts, I?m sure, are appreciated by all pupils and parents but the question is: how sincere and honest is he in helping school children?

The population is not deaf-and-dumb. They still remember the ?bilan? of Cassam Uteem during his terms as Lord Mayor, as minister of Social security and as president of the Republic of Mauritius. Perhaps he could tell us why he failed to come forward with such suggestions when he had the power to do so. May be he was too busy at that time. Never mind it?s never too late to make amends. Mr Uteem may justify his present stand by donating part of his handsome pension and other financial benefits to deserving orphanages. And why not community service as well! Vallée-Pitot, Plaine-Verte and Roche-Bois badly need such help after supporting Cassam Uteem for over 25 years. Action speaks better than mere words, says the adage.
