Tim Need On the beach of Mon Choisy…
Tim Need has decided he wanted to be happy. He has also decided his home country Wales or anywhere else in the West for that matter couldn’t give him the kind of quality of life he aspired to. So he gave up on his international career as a golfer and chose to make it… or break it on Mauritian shores!
Remember Simon Need from last week? Tim’s the younger brother. When big brother came to Mauritius, fell in love and got married, everybody in the Need family came over… except Tim! He had other priorities then, and a young teenager of 13 could certainly not be bothered with “proper things” like marriages and all!
Eventually the young lad decided to take an interest in what was happening around him and a few weeks later he found himself “awed at the sheer beauty” surrounding him - the beaches, the sun, the place.
At university in Scotland, studying business management, Tim got more and more involved in his golf. So much so that, four years later, when he finished uni, the young man could not decide for the life of him what he wanted to do. So, off he went to the Land of Oz to make up his mind… and of course to bury the mad and crazed university life surely. Tim blushed - it must be true!
Five and a half months later, our friend still hadn’t made his mind up. And, out of the blue, he gets a phone call from big brother happily settled in Mauritius by then. Well, I do not know exactly what was said. Remember the frustration of last week? Of not being let into the secrets of the Gods? I thought younger Tim would be easier to convince - but that would be telling short a Capricorn! Oh no, Tim would not let on. “Let’s just say that I was convinced. I didn’t know whether to continue playing golf professionally or to go for an executive job somewhere in London. Suffice it to say that Simon’s option was better…”
The brothers are now building a house at Domaine de Bon Espoir. “This is symbolical. We are building here. We are here to stay!” But surely someone his age, just out of university with the madness that accompanies university life must get bored at times? “Not at all. My goodness, barbecues and beers on the beach? And when all my friends are on a waiting list to come and visit because they wish it were them? Never!” says a smug Tim.
Goodness, big brother must give Tim at least two months off to entertain his friends! “Not at all, they could join in and help us rather!” replies Simon. The brothers look at each other. And smile. The affection is tangible. And yet there is a difference of thirteen years between Simon and Tim. Amazing…
If we are not to be told of the big secret for another month - at least I got that far!, then can we at least know where Tim sees himself in 15 years’ time? The smile lights up the face… “If, at the age of 40, I am on the beach at Mon Choisy with my wife and Simon is next to me with his wife and the kids are playing somewhere around and we all have smiles on our faces, I would have succeeded…”
If you are not moved now, you will never be. I could almost forgive Tim for not letting me in on his secret…
