South Africa?s Mandela sues over forged art sales
Former South African President Nelson Mandela has filed a lawsuit against a former associate and a businessman for selling forged works of art depicting his prison years, local media reported. Speaking to the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC), Mandela?s long-time friend and lawyer George Bizos said that the 86-year-old anti-apartheid icon had filed an affidavit.
?The demands very briefly are that the marketing of these unsigned merchandise which they are selling must stop. They must account as to how many they sold over the years, how much was collected, how many they got left and what happened to the money,? he told SABC radio. ?This is not a trial, this is an application which has been served, they have a certain period to respond to the affidavit of Mr. Mandela,? he said.
Mandela had produced a limited edition of signed sketches and paintings, many depicting Robben Island where he spent 18 of his 27 years in prison, which were sold to raise funds for charities which he supports. There have been reports in the local media that unscrupulous dealers have tried to cash in on his name with fakes.
