Riambel : dangerous coastal road
This road is extremely dangerous at all points from the junction of the cemetery road and the main coastal road. They are of great concern to all road users especially at the junction mentioned above the corner leading to the main public beach, football ground, restaurant and all amenities.
At the cemetery road junction there is no pavement at all on either side of the road - It has been like this since time immemorial in spite of increasing population, accommodation and various new hotels that have been built. Obviously the volume of traffic has greatly increased by tourists carrying-coaches and the racing mini ? vans transporting staff to and from those hotels.
The concrete border stones makers are broken by reckless speeding drivers negotiating this sharp blind spot on both sides of the corner road. Heavy vehicules using this particular area cannot see the road properly even in cases of near miss or accident they cause. They just do not care. The same scenario is true of the corner end of the straight yet non existing pavement stretch of the road leading to the football ground and the public beach.
On this rather reckless speeding strip of then road in between the dangerous corners is an inappropriate and ridiculous road sign indicating the end of road speed limit thus encouraging drivers to speed up at will.
There is scarely anywhere safe for pedestrians to go to except to jump in the sugar cane ditch which is approximately two to two and a half feet deep. This part of the road is also covered by overgrown sugar cane leaves.
Many fatals accidents have occurred here and are likely to happen again and again if decision is made to remedy this dangerous situation. To make matters worse, the road is dark. More street lighting is badly needed and replacement burnt out bulbs be replaced rather quickly and not wait for years This is no exaggeration .
We have on different occasions in 2003 and 2004 complained to the Grand-Port and Savanne district Council by explaining in detail this current dangerous situation but no action have been taken.
We propose following safety measures: Roads humps to minimize speed limits, no overtaking signs to be clearly seen on both sides of the road and no overtaking white lining to be marked.
Pavements to be organized and handrail to be appropriately secured and finally adequate street lighting to be installed all along this stretch of the road.
