<B>Settling of scores between politicians</B>

The attorney general, Rama Valayden, will have to pay Rs 200,000 in damages to MMM MP Jayen Cuttaree, according to a ruling by judge Paul Lam Shang Leen. But he has already said he will appeal against the judgment. Jayen Cuttaree sued Rama Valayden in Court for Rs 5 million after the latter said that Jayen Cuttaree, the then minister of Foreign Affairs, had a free birthday party at Maritim Hotel. But the judge was satisfied with the statements of the Maritim staff and of the ex-minister. He pointed out that his ruling might have been different if the criticism had been made in good faith but the fact that Rama Valayden did not apologise proved that it was not.

<B>Undergroung parking space at Cathedral Square</B>

The Saint Louis Citypark will become a reality in January 2008. After nine years, work will start in November on an underground car park. The present one (known as Cathedral Square) will be transformed into a public garden. The new car park, which will cost Rs190 million, will be open from 6 am to 9 pm during the week and from 6 am to 4 pm on Saturdays with a 24/7 security service. This project is part of a wider plan for Port-Louis with a certain number of streets transformed into pedestrian areas. The need to solve parking problems has become a must in the capital in view of the extension of its activities.

<B>Violette? the end of her story</B>

The remains of Violette Antoinette, 84, were found 16 months after she disappeared in Plaine-Champagne. Members of the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit made the sad discovery during training in Plaine-Champagne. The old-aged pensioner disappeared during an outing with the pensioners? club of Pamplemousses organised by the ministry of Social Security. Despite long searches done by different police departments, she could not be found until last Thursday. She was then identified thanks to her ID card found next to her remains.

<B>16-year old boy tortured</B>

The (mis)management of youth rehabilitation centres has come up again after a 16 year-old boy was ?tortured? at the Correctional Youth Centre (CYC). He was forced to remain shut away in a cell for two whole days. He was naked and forced to sleep on the ground with no blanket or sheet. Thanks to a phone call, the Ombudsperson for Children came to the CYC and was able to talk to the boy. The two officers concerned, ASP Phagoo and officer Sadeo, were immediately transferred after she informed the commissioner of prisons and the Prime minister?s office.
