The perfect dessert for Eid-Ul-Fitr
People of Muslim faith celebrated Eid-Ul-Fitr on Sunday. Most people visited relatives to celebrate it. “Eid means the end of the fasting period for most of us. Some can continue to fast for six days after Eid but we’re not bound to do it. Anyway, on the day of Eid, people celebrate with their family and a special meal that everyone can share is prepared.”
At this family’s place in Beau-Bassin, there was chicken kalia, salad, and cakes… But Eid wouldn’t be the same without the traditional “vermicelli.” The perfect dessert after a good briani…
Vermicelli is made either in water or milk. But in both cases, the ingredients are the same: ghee, raisins, badam – sort of almonds – and sugar. They serve some for lunch and dinner and keep some to share with neighbours and friends. “Making vermicelli or any other dish for Eid doesn’t demand much work. You just have to know how to do it. Even though your first trial is not that good, your second one will surely be better…” explains an experienced old woman.
Nothing seems to be a problem. “Ramadan is not so hard. First we’re used to doing it. And, when you’ve got faith, you just don’t ask yourself questions. God is there to help you and give you courage to do it. My mother is 103 and she fasts the whole month and even the six additional days after Eid.”
