No time !
Thinking of you Mum, I was pondering why nowadays no one has time for others. How contradictory it is when years back women had five or more kids to look after, were toiling in sugar cane fields and doing household chores but still had time to keep in touch with their relatives compared to our new generation who find no time despite all the facilities in our lives.
Some time-consuming activities in the past were soaking clothes and handwashing in rivers, grinding of ?masala?, looking for fodder and caring for animals or cutting wood for cooking. Nevertheless, most women would care for each other, especially at difficult times. Astonishingly, our youngsters have none of the above tasks to perform daily and yet they have no time to share. Why?
Was the 24-hour day years ago longer than now? Were the women in the past superwomen? I humbly believe that our ladies in the past were making an effort to respect those in their neighbourhood. And for the sake of this respect they would cohabitate. In any distress, a neighbour would run to help the unfortunate. But now one thinks twice or even more before giving a helping hand. Why?
Maybe because we have more money and believe that everything can be done with it! Let us imagine someone in a family who does not like to mingle with his/her neighbours for some unknown reason and suddenly happens to fall down. The money we boast about, can it be of any help right now? Whom do we expect to be of help to that person? Of course, those living directly within his/her surroundings. As we see, each of us needs the help of another directly or indirectly.
So, why do we behave as strangers or worse be thankful to someone only during hard times? Let us ask God to give us the power of tolerance and accept everyone as he/she is.
God, please make us realise that no one is perfect. Let us organise ourselves to find time for others. Remember, time is priceless and the one who makes the best use of it is the happiest of all. Thank you Mum for teaching me this.
