Mumbai bids teary adieu to Mahajan
Scores of BJP workers converged at the Shivaji Park crematorium here where the last rites of senior BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was performed yesterday.
The entire area was being cleaned up and devotional songs being sung amidst tight security arrangements by the police as the funeral would be attended by several VVIPs, including Vice President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha L K Advani.
The last rites of Mahajan, who would be given a state funeral, will be performed at around noon by his son Rahul. Mumbai Police Commissioner A N Roy supervised the security arrangements at the crematorium.
A heavy security presence was seen with policemen keeping vigil in plain clothes and sniffer dogs pressed into service. Traffic from Worli to Dadar has been diverted and the movement of vehicles along the Western Express Highway might also be affected.
A heavy posse of policemen were posted along the route of the funeral procession from Worli to Dadar.
Poignant scenes were witnessed at the residence of BJP leader at Worli in central Mumbai with family members gathering to bid him a final farewell.
An inconsolable Rekha, the departed leader’s wife, broke down on seeing the body which was brought to their residence from the state BJP headquarters yesterday morning.
Mahajan’s daughter Poonam tried to console her mother but broke down and was comforted by her uncle and BJP leader Gopinath Munde.
The tragedy appeared enormous for Mahajan’s mother Prabhavati who clinged to the body of her eldest son, though her daughters and son Prakash tried to console her.
The body, received by Prakash, Munde and BJP leader Prakash Javdekar at the residence, was kept on a flower decked platform in the premises where huge cut-outs of Mahajan with caption “Pramod Mahajan amar rahe” were put up. BJP workers started pouring in at the residence much before the body was brought in an ambulance.
