In love with Shakespeare?
The English Speaking Union, chaired by Sir Victor Glover, organised the annual English Speaking Competition last Wednesday in Curepipe. After eight students were assessed for their ability to master the language of Shakespeare, the winner was finally chosen by the jury. Sushita Gopal, a student from the Dr Maurice Curé State Secondary school was rewarded for her mastery of the language as well as her convincing delivery.
She will now have the opportunity of representing Mauritius at the international competition to be held in London between 9th and 12th May. Hearing her talk with such conviction about ?differences and diversity? (this year?s theme), we are sure that she will be an excellent ambassador for the country.
Yet, the panel, chaired by the British High Commissioner, Mr. Anthony Godson, and composed of Rosalind Burford, director of the British Council, and Sharmilla Bhima, assistant treasurer of the ESU executive committee, must have had a difficult time choosing a winner among the participants as the standard was generally high.
This competition has become a tradition in the English-speaking world. A twelve-year-old initiative, it fits perfectly into the ESU framework - that is to encourage the use and practice of English in Mauritius. Although English is our official language, fewer and fewer people use it. Pupils need to be encouraged to speak in public as early as possible and this is what the ESU strives to do.
