The Mauritian government has submitted Jayen Cuttaree?s application for the post of general director of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). The minister of Foreign affairs and International trade is the first Mauritian to apply for the highest office in such an important international organization. Mauritian diplomacy is being mobilised to do everything possible for this application to succeed. But the lobbying promises to be hard, the more so, since Kenya has just announced its intention of presenting a candidate. Mauritius thought it was presenting the only African candidate, which would have improved Jayen Cuttaree?s chances of being appointed. The competition is on between the candidates, including those from Brazil and Uruguay. The appointment is to be done through a consensus and not through the election mode. It is thus a matter of charming the highest number of WTO member countries.

Difficult to overcome job losses in textile

A survey by the Association Mauricienne des Femmes Entrepreneurs (AMFE), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program, reveals that women aged 40 and above hesitate to apply for another job. After the major dismissals that occurred in the textile sector, the AMFE decided to make a survey among 400 unemployed women to show the impact such dismissals had had. Aline Wong, and Aase Smedler presented the report last Friday in the presence of CMT manager, François Woo. The report shows how difficult it is for women above 45 to adapt to another job and learn something new. At the same time, they often said that they are already too old to take another job. All these lay-offs definitely have a negative impact on family life and health, the report says.

New luxury hotel opens on West coast
