Glitch on Concorde a month before last flight
With its last flight just weeks away, the supersonic jet Concorde experienced an engine surge over the Atlantic and had to be diverted to an airport in Wales, British Airways said yesterday. A spokesman said the problem on the flight from New York was minor and would not scupper the jet-age icon?s final month in service. Passengers were bussed from Wales to London. ?What happened is a temporary engine surge during the flight in one of its four engines,? the spokesman said.
?The aircraft flew subsonic for the remainder of the journey. Flying subsonic uses more fuel than flying supersonic, so as a result the aircraft diverted to Cardiff.?
The Concorde, the only commercial airliner that flies faster than the speed of sound, is due to go out of service on October 24. Air France, the only other operator, stopped flying Concorde in May this year, after passenger traffic failed to recover from a crash three years ago.
The BA spokesman said there were no plans to suspend Concorde?s last weeks of service as a result of Wednesday?s incident. ?This is not some kind of major issue that is going to involve a huge amount of engineering,? he said.
