?Businesses should cooperate more to enhance the tourism sector?

?Mauritius is a beautiful island with people of an immense generosity and very friendly. However, when it comes to business, I?ve noticed (and I am not the only one) that some tend to adopt a very bad mentality. As the saying goes: ?If the grass of my neighbour is greener than mine, I will not try to make his grass even greener. Instead, I will try to turn it brown.? In mere words, there are Mauritians who are sometimes jealous of the money others are making. I find it a pity that people do not focus enough on what they do but rather on what others are doing.

If they find that others are thriving in a business, they will try to get into the same business just for the sake of getting more money. By doing so, they destroy many businesses. For example, let?s look at taxi drivers. There are so many of them on the road that none is earning what they should have actually earned. I am in the tourism business and I can say that the same thing is happening in this sector. Some are so jealous that they don?t hesitate to spoil the reputation of another in the same business.

People should be doing what they are qualified for and not something which they think will bring them more money. To understand my point, we just have to reflect on what happened at Ilot Gabriel. Tourists are now more reluctant to go there because they have heard that the service is not good and so on. The focus should be more on people and less on money. It is time for the government to take control over things.

My thought is that people in tourism should cooperate more with one another to enhance the sector, especially it is becoming today a main pillar of our economy. We have to make the coastal and other tourist areas more attractive. We have to be more environmentally responsible. When you have a treasure such a Mauritius, you should know how to keep it!?
