At least five construction workers were killed in Uganda when a half-finished three-storey hotel they were working on collapsed, police said yesterday.

Twenty-one people also believed to be working on the hotel were rescued after the building, in a complex about 18 km (11 miles) from the capital Kampala, crashed down on Wednesday. More were believed to be trapped in the rubble.

“At least five are confirmed dead, but we suspect there may be others,” police spokesman Assuman Mugenyi told Reuters. “Even this morning there are still voices crying out for help from under the wreckage.” Mugenyi said officials from the Ministry of Housing had launched an investigation. Last week, a new classroom collapsed at a primary school near Kampala, killing two people.
