The decrease in duty from the last budget has served the interests of cosmetics. Sale of fragrances increased especially with Mothers’ Day two Sundays ago. People didn’t hesitate to buy such products, as their prices have become quite the same as Mauritius Duty Free Paradise shop at the airport. According to the managing director of Mado Parfums, the only importer of high-class cosmetics, this trend started even before the budget. He considers that purchasing power is now higher than ten years ago and more women and men use cosmetics.

Within three years, the consumption has gone up by 35% reaching some Rs 128 million last year against Rs 96 million in 2003 and Rs 92 in 2002. France remains the main country from which Mauritius imports perfumery and cosmetics with a figure of Rs 117 million last year. Yet, this market has not always been profitable for Mado. It is actually the sole importer of fragrances and other such products.

Mikado, which used to do it, closed its fragrance departments as taxes had made the products too expensive. But Mado’s perseverance has finally been rewarded. “When we started in 1995, the situation was really tough but our perseverance has finally been profitable for us. Today we have six shops and we could soon open a seventh one,” Daoud Ingar explains.

However, the main problem Mado has to deal with is counterfeit fragrances, which could tarnish the image of Mauritius as a high-class tourism destination. “A few days ago, customs seized 1,500 bottles of fragrances from China. It is quite hard to say how many of these products arrive in Mauritius as they do not come in suitcases only. But it is clear that this is a huge market!”
