The holidays are there ? however short they may seem. You have finished marking term scripts and filling in marks in reports. The best thing to do would be to forget about the school until the eve of resuming. But, at the same time, mid-year is a good time when one can ask oneself about the value of work in our lives. In fact, wherever we work, the workplace is at the end of the day the same. If we are unhappy at work, then the rest of our life can be miserable and you can make the lives of a lot of people miserable.

Sometimes we expect others to make our lives better ? our rector, principal, head of department, better pay, longer holidays, more brilliant pupils, etc. It is true they can play a part in our happiness but the fundamental question is: Am I happy in my work?

I think loving one?s job and knowing that, whatever happens, one can handle it and be appreciated, are very important and even more important than money. This is why I thought I would share with you this questionnaire on measuring workplace satisfaction published in Times Education Supplement of March 16th 2007.

Answering and reflecting on these questions can make a world of a difference to your work and your life. It can help both teachers and those who lead them to feel there are areas which can be changed through efforts from everybody.

Do I know what is expected of me at work?

Do I have the materials and equipment I need to do my work right?

Do I have the opportunity to do at work what I do best every day?

In the past week, have I received recognition or praise for good work?

Does my supervisor seem to care about me as a person?

Is there someone at work who encourages my development?

Do my opinions seem to count?

Am I made to feel that my work is important?

Are my co-workers committed to doing quality work?

Do I have a best friend at work?

In the past six months, have I talked with someone about my progress?

At work, have I had opportunities to learn and grow?
