History seems to be the latest craze of our politicians, these days. Past events and eminent figures of yesteryears are now being revisited. The population is being invited for a trip down memory lane. But, what the self-appointed pundits do not tell us, is that each of them has his own agenda.

Bérenger is engineering an aggiornamento for reasons better known to himself. Some of his statements are rather revealing. Now, we are being told that Gaëtan Duval was not as devilish as painted by the MMM in the seventies. We also learn that the practices of Labourdonnais related to slave chasing can be set aside. The hated Adrien d?Epinay is rehabilitated in the eyes of the militants. We are now given to understand that he was a great Mauritian. Another discovery is that all that has been said on Ratsitatane was bogus. What a compilation of corrective statements ! One wonders if at the end of the eight lectures, research would not have revealed some justifications to the shooting of Anjalay Coopen at Belle-Vue-Harel?

The press has not reported whether Rama Poonoosamy, ex-politburo member of the MMM, was present in the pack full Port-Louis Theatre, last Saturday. Militants from Port-Louis are betting that Poonoosamy must have been showing a sullen face. They remember how some thirty years ago, he toured the city, narrating and interpreting history the MMM way. Ratsitatane was presented as a model of anti-slavery resistance. Following suit, Lord Mayor Lee Cheong Lem was urged to decline, in a most inelegant manner, an invitation from Philippe Lenoir for a ceremony in front of the statue of Labourdonnais in Place d?Armes. Poonoosamy surely has reminiscences of all the talking on D?Epinay, Lavoquer and the oligarchs who sent Jeremy back to sea.

Bérenger has the right to change his interpretation of historical events. But those who were fed with MMM literature and propaganda in the seventies are at a loss. Which reading of history is the correct one ? Is it what was said three decades ago or is it the leader?s viewpoint as expressed in last Saturday?s lecture ?

Bérenger is not the only one to revisit history. Some others are doing same. Minister David is again on the block after his ridiculous show a few months ago. We recall how Burty David and Lord Mayor Issack, some time back, rode their Rossinante to fight windmill Adrien d?Epinay in Company?s Garden.

Last week, hommage was paid to late Sir Abdool Razack Mohamed and rightly so. But, the sore point is that some turncoats, now Labour ministers, proved to be most verbose. They seem to have forgotten how vehemently they fought the old leader when they were members of the MMM. Better, rank and file Goolfee. At least, he was honest enough to apologize for what he considers to be his misdoings towards late Sir Abdool.

Our politicians, still in business, would better leave history to historians. Please, spend your time and energy to improve the present situation and prepare the future of our children.
