Diplomatic blockbuster?
Marjorie Harrison was taken aback by the natural beauty of our island and she makes the most of this splendour in her beachside bungalow on the North coast with Annabelle, her beloved dog and faithful companion. But, before Annabelle could share relaxing weekend walks on the beach with her mistress, she had to be kept in quarantine for six months. Luckily she received daily visits, which also allowed Marjorie to make a good group of friends. ?This helped both of us to make it through?, she says.
Marjorie is another of those expatriates who can?t quite understand why there is so much traffic on such a small island! Although being the US Embassy public affairs officer takes up a fair amount of her time, she has managed a pretty active social life and even joined a theatre group called ?Rain or Shine Theatre Company? where she starred in two plays! One in January 2004 entitled ?Top Girls? and the other in September 2004 - ?The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen?s Guild Dramatic Society?s Production of Macbeth?. She played Banquo and had to roller skate across the stage to act out his ghost, now that is what I call Shakespearean imagination with a twist! ?It was great fun!? affirms Marjorie.
As an amateur actress, she certainly misses her good old American movies! If she hadn?t been public affairs officer, we might just have seen her in a film costarring with Tom Cruise! Sightseeing is something Marjorie is acquainted with and before she leaves our sunny island for her next posting in Kuala Lumpur, she still has to visit a few more places to complete her list!
She is an independent lady who loves travelling. She has seen quite a few places and met plenty of people from different walks of life. She particularly enjoys the mix of cultures she has encountered here and it is one of the reasons why she truly loves her job. She is certainly very pleasant and easy to talk to! She also likes taking part in work activities that include fun, such as the English Speaking Union activities. ?It feels good every now and again, to take part in something fun, whilst at work?.
Marjorie has never seen as many rainbows in her life as during her stay here and she will certainly miss that as well as the ?wonderful smiling people? when she leaves Mauritius. She also enjoys the nice mix of flavours available here. Her favorite cuisine is Indian, but she still has to learn how to make our traditional curry! Fortunately though, she has bought herself a Mauritian cookbook so she can practise when she gets back to Washington!
So, all in all, underneath that serious work title, our Marjorie is a fun person and we hope that the end of her stay is just as fun as she seems to be?
