● Rights group slams Bangladesh for religious persecution. A human rights group said yesterday that attacks by religious extremists on Bangladesh?s Ahmadiyya minorities had increased in recent years and blamed the government for failing to act against those responsible. Ahmadiyyas had been beaten up, their mosques attacked and their children prevented from going to school, the US-based Human Rights Watch said. It said in a report that the Bangladesh government was trying to appease Sunni Muslim extremist groups who want the Ahmadiyyas to be declared non-Muslims. Bangladesh?s Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, dismissed the human rights report as baseless. ?It is not true that the government has aligned itself with extremist groups.?
