Australia hunts “Dr Death”
An Indian-trained surgeon nicknamed “Dr Death”, who has been linked to the deaths of 87 Australian patients, should face murder, negligence and fraud charges, an official inquiry said Friday. Dr Jayant Patel, already banned from surgery in two US states, left Australia in March after being linked to the deaths, which occurred while he was director of surgery at Queensland’s regional Bundaberg Hospital in 2003-04.
“The police will now set in train the extradition process,” said Queensland state premier Peter Beattie in a statement announcing the international manhunt for the surgeon.
