Since 1977, Ledikasyon Pou Travayer (LPT) has offered courses in Kreol to illiterates. Do you think your technique can be adapted to schools if ever Kreol is implemented?
Yes, definitely. Our technique may be used as a basis to teach Kreol in schools. Of course, it might have to be adapted for children, but the basis can remain as it is. For instance, we organise teacher training every year, which could also be used for schoolteachers. As regards the written form of Kreol, I do not think that should be a problem either. Today, there are two main trends for the written form of the language but they have many common features. It will thus not be difficult to harmonise the few differences. Moreover, we should remain flexible on this issue. Why not accept two or three different forms for one particular sound? This exists in French and causes no problem, does it?
What have you and your ?students? learnt from each other since the implementation of LPT ?
I believe that the classes offer much more than literacy to people who do not know how to read and write. It is a kind of liberation: they become more independent. These classes have showed that Kreol works: people can learn through their mother tongue. They are not lost as with any foreign language and this helps them to feel totally fulfilled. As far as I am concerned, it has been a great pleasure to teach these determined and generous persons. Besides, I have noticed that these people often have a far better memory than others.
According to you, will it be easy to switch from Kreol to learning another language?
Once more, that will not be a problem. On the contrary, to have good skills in one?s mother tongue is supposed to facilitate the learning of another language. The level in other languages should be higher. This has been proved by an American study. Actually, children who are taught subjects through their mother tongue succeed at school, as they are more confident and do not lose their identity. This is why it is obvious that Kreol will benefit all children in schools.
