The Flash Flood of March 2013: When loud Port-Louis fell into silence!

Angkush Poonye.

À l’heure du tout à l’image et du buzz sans suite, «l’express» souhaite faire découvrir la plume de poètes, de chanteurs, d’écrivains et de tous ceux qui jettent leur âme sur le papier, et qui mettent en mots des réflexions profondes.

On Saturday March 30th, 2013, Mauritius became numb.

Probably, one of the darkest Saturdays in its history,

Probably, one of the deepest scars since its independence,

Sadly, one of the gloomiest days that still ache us.

On that day, the rain seemed ferocious,

Pouring down like a raging river,

Lashing violently not just against windows and roofs,

Whipping our souls without mercy!

On that day, Port-Louis, our beloved Capital was trapped,

The merry hustles and bustles interrupted,

Our capital’s bubbly nature frowned upon within minutes!

Old colonial buildings and fancy cars almost submerged,

Our capital’s rustic charm faded within hours!

On that day, the rain seemed incessant,

The usually dynamic Port-Louis suddenly drowning,

The usually dominant Port-Louis suddenly struggling,

to save the people and its dignity!

On that day, Mauritius lost 11 precious citizens.

Still racked by an enduring pain,

Unfillable void and Unwiped memories,

Unanswered questions to the Almighty.

On Saturday March 30th, 2013, Mauritianism made the difference,

We were weakened but our resilience showed,

We were bruised but our healing energy showed,

We were broken but our solidarity conquered!
