Maurice Lam: “It is high time for the country to look at the use of land”
Business Magazine talked to Maurice Lam, Chairman of the Board of Investment, in the wake of FDI data released by the Bank of Mauritius. He finds it imperative for Mauritius  to attract FDI for green field projects. Stressing on the difficulty faced by the sugar industry, he notes that every year, there are many planters who stop growing sugar cane.

“What will happen to the land, which then remains non-productive?” he asks. According to him there is an urgent need, albeit it is high time, he adds, for the entire country to look at the use of land, at our attitude towards land and its ownership. And also at the emotional sentiments associated with land due to our past history. We must therefore come up with a fifty-year plan for land ownership and its use, a plan that will be accepted by the entire country.
