Assessment, which everybody knows in the hospital is another word «given» by the medical council instead of the word exam. This is an ?exam? for the young doctors. So exam exists in Mauritius for internship doctors. Now we are going to prove how this exam is ?biased? and ?unworthy? and not eligible to be taken for resident(internship)doctors.

Some of the consultants and Specialists are not well qualified, that is they do not have a proper degree as required by the medical council or the Public service commission (psc). How come now the government , PSC and the medical council allow these specialists to assess young doctors. That too, they use to fail interns. Some interns even fail their exam 3 times in a row. The specialists decide themselves whether you have to take exams again or repeat their units again. This habit is going on in all the hospitals over the island where internship doctors are working.

The assessment depends on the mood of the consultant or specialist on that day.

Some interns ?pass" their assessment even if they are not that good compared to other colleagues who are better than them,for the sole reason that they know the specialist or consultant (as it works in Mauritius)

Some Specialists ask questions out of medical context.For example; How many monkeys does Mauritius export annually? How many reservoirs do we have in Mauritius? In which year did the Dutch visit our country? They ask the trainee doctors these stupid questions just to humiliate them and to have fun.

In some cases, the interns answered all the questions which were asked by the specialist doctor, but because of only one wrong answer the specialist (Sp) maked the interns fail. Some interns even fail the assessment up to 3 times.

Some specialists ask questions at Sp level, which do not concern General medicine, when we are not even RMO (Registered Medical Officer)

For example in Moka Eye Hospital, the Sp asked questions based on Cataract surgery ?step by step?. How this will help for a general practitioner. Is this called training.

As general doctor we already passed our exams. We have been working hard for serious exams for 5-6-7 years by highly qualified and trained professors, lecturers or specialists. How come the specialists and consultants in Mauritius with no proper qualifications and degrees can assess us and even make interns fail.

Some specialists tell us : ?you people you learned in Mauritius in that stupid SSR medical college?.

The specialists are worst.Why? Because they still make mistakes and miss diagnosis which they will finally put on the head of interns, RMO?s .

Some Sp do not even care about our training,to teach us something helpful and useful as a general practitioner. All they do is to ask questions and ?humiliate? us in front of everybody. Is this called training?

Sp also use bad words to the young doctors. Some also use to tell interns to stop working as doctor instead of giving him or her some training. Some specialist doctors also tell interns ?you are foolish like the politicians of our country?.

When the sp commit mistakes, they use to tell patients,its all because of these young doctors and the poor equipments or bad medications the Government is providing. So they are not to be blamed at any cost.

Most of the time the Sp are not with us when we are working. Some want us to stay extra hours even when they are not in the hospital.Is this called training?

Some Sp even come late to work or go home early. Does this show any respect for the hospital?

The chances were that these Sp in their time were not assessed like us today.

In their time there was a lack of doctors. So any doctor at that time, even who did not hold a proper degree was recruited. But now things have changed. Almost all our new generation of young doctors are qualified from recognized university with proper degree which all Sp have realized by now and which is a sign of ?danger? for them.

When these Sp and consultants were trainees like us, were they excellent or good ? May be they were worst. Because till now they are still doing mistakes and missing diagnosis.

How the government can allow these Sp or consultants to take our exam?

We already study under a lot of stress and tension; some are away from their families, some facing financial problems, pass university exam and are now given assessment with these Mauritian doctors. Moreover internship is 2 years instead of 1 year as it was before.

Actually as trainees we are not properly trained and are under continuous tension and prone to commit mistakes which will harm the life of patients. This continuous tension will make us susceptible to commit mistakes.

As doctor we already studied for 5 to 7 years. Again we have to do our internship for 2 years. Now we have 3 to 5 years more to study to become specialist. So in total we have around 14 years of study. Is this an encouragement for young doctors, to be given oral exam with these stupid specialists and who even fail our fellow colleagues.

This idea of Assessment or Exam was proposed by the medical council. But first of all the president of this council himself was not elected during the election held at this council. God knows how he became president.

When we went to study medicine, internship was 1 year.How come they decided to change it as they like and that too with assessment taken by these unqualified and unelligible Specialists and consultants.

The Mauritius Institute of health(MIH) has put a new system of assessment. To be assessed by another specialist from another unit.But nothing has changed.This is not even respected in the hospitals. Moreover the other specialist is of no use because he is good friend with the sp and consultant, and so again they fail young intern doctors.

No one and no association(medical council, Mauritius institute of health, MHOA or Ministry of health and quality of life) are trying to help us concerning this issue because it?s like a vicious circle which is in favour of the specialists.
