?Hidden forms of discrimination??
Rakhee Fatadin
?It has already been 19 years since I have been in Mauritius. I came here for my studies. The reason was that the level of education was better compared to Madagascar. The main reason, however, was because English is the medium of teaching in educational institutions. In Madagascar, it is French, which is used. But I wanted to learn English and that?s why I came here. At first, it was really difficult to adapt. I did not know a single word of English. I had to learn English at the level of Standard I in Standard V, as well as catch up whatever had been taught in all those years, which I had missed. But my teachers have been very supportive. They have helped me a lot so that I could succeed.
During all those years spent here, I have found Mauritius simply superb! People here are very nice and courteous. They like to help others a lot. Here is it more developed and cleaner. The beaches are so beautiful, compared to those of Madagascar, where you can?t even swim. I have travelled a lot and I can tell you that I have not seen such beautiful gardens as we have here.
Here, you also have lots of facilities and benefits, which you can enjoy. In Madagascar, everything is chargeable. You have to pay for medical facilities and you do not get any social aid or pension benefit. With all the supermarkets and hypermarkets, which exist here, I find it excellent!
With the competition among these supermarkets and hypermarkets, and with their advertising campaigns and brochures given; I think that not only the consumers are the winners in terms of lowest price available; but it also saves time. You already know which products you are going to buy, at which price and where.
I have also really appreciated the new PRB. It?s a very good thing indeed. I think that this will encourage more people to seek jobs in the public sector now.
I have been working in call centers for quite some time. Here, the basic salary given is quite low in proportion to the number of hours that you have to work. If we did not get the productivity bonus, we would not have earned much. I have also noticed that there are still some forms of hidden racism and sex discrimination in the country.?
