Whatever Midas touched turned to gold. Midas is dead, long live François Woo! This self-made man, who opened his first spinning mill 20 years ago, was the host of most of the Who?s who of the island, last Thursday at La Tour Koenig, as he inaugurated a new clothing factory, laid the foundation stone for his second spinning mill that will produce 52 different types of thread and inaugurated a new residential facility for his foreign workers.

François Woo says the key to his success is a passion for what he does and a vision for the future. His vision is what has made him invest Rs 3 billion when the textile industry is at its lowest ever. Woo says, however, that the time for T-shirts and pullovers is long gone. Fashion is now the way forward.

François Woo sets the example in what government hopes will be the new-trend entrepreneurship. Prime minister Ramgoolam and Finance minister Sithanen have both insisted on the facilities government seeks to give to budding entrepreneurs. Determination, adds Ramgoolam, is the key to success. And Woo is determined to be among the 10 world leaders in the industry by 2008. A success, if achieved, that the country will be celebrating together with FrancoisWoo.
