Israel lifted a 24-hour ban on French flu jabs after tests revealed no apparent connection with the deaths of four people given the vaccine in recent days.

Following an assessment with experts and representatives of the French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis, Health Minister Yaacov Ben Yizri told a press conference that the vaccination treatment can be renewed. All the experts consulted “completely ruled out any possibility of a connection between the incidents that occurred, unfortunately, in Kiryat Gat and the vaccinations,” Ben Yizri said. “The vaccination can be renewed as of this evening,” he said.

Attempting to calm concerns over the affair which caused a stir in Israel, the minister pulled up his sleeve and was given the vaccine himself before dozens of cameras.

Alain Bernal, spokesman for the Sanofi-Pasteur laboratory which produced the drug, had said earlier that its experts were investigating the deaths. He nevertheless said that all four victims were “of an elderly age and suffered from chronic illness”, and that their deaths may be entirely unrelated to the vaccine.

The four victims – aged 53, 67, 70 and 75 – had received the vaccination at the same site in the town of Kiryat Gat in southern Israel during the past eight days. Over 100,000 Israelis have already been given flu vaccinations in Israel this year, the ministry said.
