PM?s plea for Chagos
The prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam, expressed his discontent with the major military powers during the14th Summit of non-aligned countries in Cuba. To show that the rules are not equitable between countries, he took the example of Chagos. Even though Mauritius acquired its independence years ago, it has still not been able to exercise its sovereignty over the archipelago, as it is one of the major US military bases. The PM also seized the opportunity to have talks with heads of state such as Indian Prime minister, Manmohan Singh and Venezuelan President, Hugo Chavez.
