An international agency helping spearhead the global fight against AIDS said yesterday it had suspended assistance to Uganda because of evidence of financial mismanagement of funds in the east African country.

The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria said its auditors had serious concerns about the operations of the special agency set up by the Ugandan government to handle disbursements by the Geneva-based organisation. “The Global Fund has decided to suspend disbursements to Uganda”, Global Fund spokesman Jon Liden told Reuters.
