The recent opening of the new road between Vandermeesch and Réduit comes as one of the many solutions attempted by the government to reduce traffic jams. The new link road, which had started under the former government, is expected to reduce road congestion in Rose-Hill centre as well as in Belle-Rose. Its positive effects could even be felt up to St-Jean. The link road is also expected to revive Ebène.

This issue is probably one of the most important problems Mauritians are confronted with everyday. With the increasing number of vehicles on our roads, the situation is expected to get worse if the authorities do not make the right decisions soon. Peak hours seem to last all day and all night on our roads – particularly as you get closer to Port-Louis.

The public should therefore be relieved to know that the deputy prime minister and minister of Public infrastructure, Rashid Beebeejaun, announced more measures to increase traffic flow. In his speech on the occasion of the official opening of the new road, he highlighted that the government would take the necessary steps towards that goal.

To facilitate entry into the capital, the minister will introduce a number of initiatives such as a bus lane between Trianon and Port-Louis and another on St Jean road. A road traffic plan is also on the agenda at Quay D. The construction of an auto-bridge at Pailles for those using the third lane is planned as well as better synchronisation of traffic lights at the entry to Port-Louis.

Port-Louis centre will not be neglected, according to the prime minister, Navin Ramgoolam. He announced, at a reception in his honour by the Mauritian-Chinese community, that the Japanese have worked upon a plan to relieve congestion in Port-Louis. The project, which includes a tunnel between Caudan roundabout and government house, could be implemented soon according to the “build, operate, transfer” formula.

As far as other main roads are concerned, the government will consider the road project between Phoenix and Beaux-Songes. Although this will cost some Rs 250 million, the project might be worth the effort, as it will reduce traffic in the centre of Quatre-Bornes and facilitate access to Victoria hospital.

“Putting people first” is the government’s leitmotiv. If it really wants to make the life of each Mauritian easier, the reduction of traffic jams is definitely a crucial issue.
