Australian MP?s adopted son case takes new twist
A senior Australian government minister who admitted to being flabbergasted when he was reunited with the son he gave up for adoption 27 years ago said yesterday tests had proved the man was not his son after all. Tony Abbott, a devout Christian and a key adviser to conservative Prime Minister John Howard, gave up for adoption the infant boy he and his then teenage girlfriend had in 1977. Abbott had a Christmas reunion with Daniel O?Connor, the man said to be his 27-year-old son, and the unusual case grabbed national headlines when it became public last month.
O?Connor coincidentally works as a sound recordist for Australian Broadcasting Corp. in the national parliament and attended many news conferences given by Abbott, sometimes even fitting microphones to his supposed father?s lapel. But DNA tests had now proved O?Connor was not Abbott?s son, Seven Network television said. Abbott said he had spoken to O?Connor about the results of the tests last week. ?Truth is stranger than fiction. This story has certainly developed some pretty surreal twists,? he said. Abbott, a Rhodes scholar who was first elected to parliament in 1994 after working as a reporter, is married with three daughters.
