Gujarat goes the Nazi way
Different badges for students from different communities - one carrying the image of a goddess and the other a star - would have raked up a major controversy in any other state. Allegations of dividing students along communal lines would have been made almost immediately.
However, in the small town of Shehra, located about 25 km from Godhra, it went unnoticed for about six years.The issue was raked up only when two trustees of the SJ Dave High School in the town raised the issue and objected to the discrimination.
The 35-year-old school was mired in controversy after fresh uniforms were issued to class VIII students. And now the district education officer (DEO) has issued a notice asking the school to stop the practice. Officials in the school said the uniforms with badges carrying a star for Muslim students and Goddess Saraswati for Hindu pupils were being distributed for about six years.
