Passengers transiting through Sir Seewosagur Ramgoolam airport should be happily surprised in the coming weeks. The total revamping of the terminal building is aimed at providing not only a more pleasant environment but also a quicker and smoother passage through formalities. It also wants to make tourists feel more at home and comfortable in their first contact with the country.

In this context, new gangways will bring passagers to the renovated terminal. The latter will be welcomed in a familiar language. Likewise, the exit counters for residents and visitors will be the same. Finally, the departure hall will be extended.

The changes do not concern just the physical aspect of the airport. Administrative procedures, which usually lead to long queues, should soon be simplified. Visitors will have to fill one immigration form only, compared to four at present. This should reduce the time spent at the immigration desk. The time to collect luggage should also be reduced to reach 35 minutes at most. Old people, pregnant women, children and handicapped people will get special attention. There will also be officers all over the terminal to guide and inform travellers.

The infrastructural changes and higher-quality services have needed an investment of Rs 20 million. Airports of Mauritius Ltd (AML), the managing company, has promised to turn the airport into the showcase of the country. When work is over, all passengers should enjoy a near VIP treatment. With 3,1 million tourists expected in 2012, AML says it wants to promote the country’s best image as soon as they set foot in the country.
