A 27-year-old man and three 18-year-old men have been charged with murder in the beating deaths of six people at a house in central Florida, police said on Sunday. The suspected ringleader in the killings of four men and two women may have been seeking revenge for the theft of a video game system and some clothes, the Volusia County sheriff’s office said.

The victims were beaten to death with aluminum baseball bats at a home in Deltona, about 25 miles (40 km) north of Orlando. Their bodies, along with that of a pet dog, were found on Friday morning at the house.

The man investigators believe was the ringleader was named as Troy Victorino. He and the three 18-year-olds, Robert Cannon, Jerone Hunter and Michael Salas, were charged with first-degree murder and armed burglary after being arrested on Saturday.

Although the murder victims all had knife wounds, the sheriff’s office said in a statement that autopsies had concluded that the deaths were all caused by beating.

“After questioning all four defendants, officials struggling to come up with a motive for the crime believe the killings were committed over the theft of some clothes and an Xbox game system owned by Victorino,” the sheriff’s office said.

Investigators said Victorino had recently been in a squabble with one of the murder victims because he blamed her for the theft of his clothes and video game system.

The property was apparently stolen from a home while Victorino spent three days in jail following his arrest on July 29 for felony battery, and he was overheard vowing to get revenge, the office said. Victorino spent eight of the last 11 years in prison, records show.

The sheriff’s office said that three 18-year-olds confessed to being involved in the murders during questioning.

The victims were identified by the sheriff’s office as Michelle Nathan, 19; Anthony Vega, 34; Roberto Gonzalez, 28; Francisco Roman, 30 and Jonathan Gleason, 18. Gonzalez was from New York. The sixth victim, a woman, had not been identified.

“These cruel murders have brought senseless and unspeakable tragedy to six innocent families,” Sheriff Ben Johnson said in a statement.

“My hope is that the arrests will help the families heal and bring justice to the victims of this horrific crime.”
