<B>Historic Victoria train station burnt down</B>

Not less than four fires broke out last week around what used to be the Victoria central train station, which dates from the 18th century. The former National Transport Corporation (NTC) office caught fire damaging the post office, which was still on the ground floor of the building. A certain number of hawkers’ stalls were also burnt down. The origin of the fire damaging the historic monument is said to be burning rubbish left behind the building. Two days later, another building in the same area caught fire damaging the post office, the Cheminots restaurant, two shops and a warehouse containing various items. Sellers and shopkeepers are desperate about the losses they have encountered.

<B>Two more dead on the roads</B>

Two youngsters lost their lives in an accident in Blue Bay. Jaysing Ramsahye, 21, and Usha Mohur, 15, died following a violent collision with a two-wheel drive. Both of them were in a small van driven by Vimal Boolaky, who was about to get engaged to Usha. He was seriously injured and admitted to Jawaharlall Nehru hospital at Rose Belle.

The group of friends, which included Veena Gujadhur and Kevin Boolaky, who have escaped unhurt, were coming back from the seaside where they had spent the day. Jaysing Ramsahye died of a dislocation of his spinal cord and his girl friend of brain haemorrhage. The police are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

<B>Not guilty plea from both parties in the Achille affair</B>

The Week-End Scope journalist pleaded not guilty in the case against four policemen. He is accused of having “unlawfully disturbed the public peace by behaving in a disorderly manner.” This incident occurred during the “Jump Around concert” when four policemen – inspector Beeharry, sergeant Asyrigadoo, and two other policemen, Taurachand and Apalasamy – “assaulted” the journalist. The four policemen also appeared in court today and also pleaded not guilty. They are accused of assaulting Jacques Achille, who had to go to hospital for treatment. He lodged a complaint with the Commission for human rights, which referred the case to the Direction of public prosecutions.
