Chetty: hero or villain ?
It all started off with a heroin seizure at his house. Since then, Antoine Chetty, notary Deelchand?s former driver, has made revelation after revelation, describing a gruesome picture of a dangerous ?mafia? engaged in horrible crimes. His incredible confessions and other ?scoops? seem to have come to an end at last. The Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) is left with a turncoat and at least fifteen suspects involved in a fraudulent and criminal network of murders, attempted murders, intimidations, arson and land theft.
The latest alleged attack by Deelchand was against Rekha Mohur, who was scalped. Deechand wanted to teach the lady a good lesson as he held her responsible for ?the break-up of solicitor Yogesh Bissessur's marriage?. The latter has so far confirmed Chetty?s allegations to the police. Rekha Mohur has since left the country.
Parvez Damree?s death by heroin overdose is another of Deelchand?s alleged feats. Damree had expressed his fears in prison as he had denounced Deelchand to the police As soon as he left prison, it seems he received a lethal injection.
Two victims of land thefts are still alive. Philippe Calou is traumatised by his agression in 2000. This inhabitant of Le Bouchon tried to prevent Deelchand and his accomplice Mooraghen from stealling a plot of land near his house. He was mugged by the latter and Chetty and left practically dead on the road. The police never bothered his assailants. The ADSU now wants to know why.
Lalldev Gujadhur was the first to denounce the notary after the latter had appropriated his dying father?s plot of land. After his complaint, he was stabbed by Chetty and two accomplices. Determined to resist intimidation, he is taking the matter to Court.
Chetty has also implicated two personalities. Barrister MP Dev Hurnam was arrested after allegations that he gave orders to attack Senior Puisne Judge Bernard Sik Yuen and to murder two police officers. He is still waiting for release on bail.
Former police commissioner Raj Dayal was apparently involved in a plot to set up Satish Nundlall, Deelchand?s embarrassing partner by planting heroin in his house. Raj Dayal was arrested but released on bail the same day.
In view of Chetty?s revelations, there is a risk that he may be considered as a hero. But the former driver is quite the contrary. His present confessions do not ? in any way ? wipe out the miseries of his victims. Even if there is a temptation to thank him for uncovering the criminal network, this must not hide the fact that he has been personally involved in numerous crimes before his confession.
