Britain to probe jail killing of Asian teenager
A judicial inquiry will be held to investigate the murder of an Asian teenager who was beaten to death by a racist cellmate in a jail for young offenders, Britain?s Home Office said yesterday.
Zahid Mubarek, 19, a first-time offender sentenced to three months for theft, was due for release on the day he was killed by skinhead Robert Stewart, now serving life for the murder.
Britain?s prison service was accused of a ?shocking catalogue of failure? in July last year by the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE) in its formal inquiry into the death.
The race watchdog?s chairman, Trevor Phillips, said at that time he was convinced that had Mubarek been white, he would not have died.
A spokesman for the Home Office said details of the inquiry would be released shortly on its website: http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/.
